Chapter Sixteen

After Hart left for dinner, Aiden went to the kitchen and sat with Juan. The Beta got him an ice pack and made him some hot chocolate.

“What did you do?” Juan asked. Aiden resisted the urge to roll his eyes.

“That’s just it, I don’t know. I don’t think I did anything.” Sometimes Hart’s behavior seemed random and erratic. Never with his friends, business partners, or clients. But with Aiden. Always with Aiden.

“It’s just he seemed so happy this morning. I heard him whistling.”

Aiden had heard that too. Hart was happy. Even when he’d been hurting him, there’d been none of the cold anger there usually was. Something good had happened, a business deal maybe, to put Hart in an exceptionally good mood. Which made it all the harder for Aiden to understand what had gone wrong.

“Maybe it wasn’t you.”

“Huh?” He glanced up to see Juan drying dishes at the sink.

“Maybe it was for Mac’s benefit. You and he haven’t been getting too close have you?”

“What? No!” Aiden said, knowing he sounded defensive.

Juan looked at him over his shoulder. “Oh, Aiden. This is Simon all over again. You can’t be that foolish, not a second time. Mr. Hart doesn’t usually give second chances so he definitely won’t give you a third.”

“There is no me and Mac. We’re not close, we’ve barely spoken two words. And that other time, Simon was the problem. I told him it was fine, I told him to back off and leave it alone. He just didn’t take the hint. Mac’s different, he’s not stupid or foolish.”

Juan turned around to face him, folding his arms. “All Alphas are stupid where Omega are concerned. It’s just a fact of life.”

“Even so, that’s not my fault.”

“You’re right, it’s not, but if there is something, you need to shut it down, right now.”

He finished up the last few dishes as Aiden sat there, waves of anger and fear rolling over him. Hart hadn’t said one word about Mac to him. Not one word. He couldn’t suspect anything, could he?

“Alright, I’m off home. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Juan eyed him critically. “There’s more ice in the fridge if you need it. Maybe use some over your eyes, they’re red and puffy. You know how Mr. Hart hates that.”

Aiden knew that better than anyone.

Juan was only gone a few minutes when Mac slipped in the side door. He paused and listened carefully.

“Vincent’s still out. Juan’s gone home,” Aiden told him.

“I know,” Mac replied, “I watched him leave.”

“Why?”

“I didn’t want him to see I was home so early.”

“What about me? I can see you’re here. And I have Hart’s ear.”

Mac took a seat across from him.

“But you wouldn’t tell on me, would you?”

“Maybe it would mean I get less of these,” Aiden said grumpily, pointing to a darkening bruise. He wasn’t expecting Mac to reach out, cupping his cheek in a gentle hand.

“Bastard was trying to provoke me. Something must have tipped him off.”

“Maybe not,” Aiden argued. “He’s jealous by nature. He stopped once you’d left the house.
